The first step in converting direct speech to indirect speech is identifying the sentence type. Is it a statement ('I like coffee') or a question ('Do you like coffee?')? Reported statements use 'said/told + that clause' with tense backshift, while reported questions use 'asked + if/wh-word + statement word order'.
